Formula and calculation method

Distance is converted to metres and elapsed time to whole seconds. Pace in seconds per unit equals elapsed seconds divided by distance expressed in that unit. Speed in metres per second equals metres divided by seconds.

The calculator uses 1 kilometre = 1,000 metres and the exact international-mile relationship 1 mile = 1,609.344 metres. Kilometres per hour equal metres per second × 3.6; miles per hour equal metres per second × 3,600 ÷ 1,609.344.

Each displayed pace is rounded once to the nearest whole second. Speed outputs are rounded once to at most eight significant digits. Because distance arithmetic uses IEEE 754 numbers, very large or highly fractional inputs may contain ordinary floating-point error.

Inputs, outputs, and boundaries

  • Inputs: a positive distance in metres, kilometres, or international miles and a positive elapsed time.
  • Outputs: pace per kilometre and international mile plus metres per second, kilometres per hour, and international miles per hour.
  • Bounds: distance accepts 0.001–1,000,000 with at most six decimal places; hours accept 0–1,000 and minutes and seconds 0–59.
  • Invalid input: zero elapsed time, blank or signed values, exponent form, excess decimal places, and out-of-range fields are rejected. Focus moves to the first invalid field.

Aletheia conventions

“Mile” means the international mile, exactly 1,609.344 metres. Pace is duration per unit distance; speed is distance per duration. This tool treats entered distance and time as measured quantities and does not add or subtract stopped time.

Limitations and disclaimer

Results do not account for elevation, terrain, weather, turns, pauses, GPS or course-measurement uncertainty, or differences between moving and elapsed time. The calculator does not generate splits, training zones, calorie estimates, race predictions, performance rankings, or health guidance.

Worked examples

Five kilometres in 25 minutes is 1,500 seconds ÷ 5 kilometres, producing 300 seconds or 5:00 per kilometre. The same effort is approximately 8:03 per international mile and 12 kilometres per hour.

One international mile in 8 minutes is exactly 8:00 per mile. Using the exact 1,609.344-metre definition, the equivalent pace rounds to 4:58 per kilometre and the speed is 7.5 miles per hour.

Common questions

Why does pace use minutes per distance?

Pace answers how much time each unit of distance took. A lower pace time represents faster movement over the same distance.

Does this use moving time or elapsed time?

It uses exactly the time you enter. The calculator cannot determine whether that value includes pauses.

Can this predict a finish time?

No. Extending one measured pace to another distance assumes performance remains constant, which this arithmetic-only tool does not claim.
